Nominations Open!

It’s been a jam-packed 24 hours since arriving in Atlanta for CareerTech VISION 2012.  The first order of business has been . . . business, from the Region V business meeting, learning details about the April conference in Salt Lake City and policy and committee updates, to the Town Hall meeting where association leaders got feedback on the Preferred Future and concerns facing CTE over the next few years.  Wednesday ended with the Awards Banquet – congratulations to all of the winners, including fellow #Vision12 blogger Robin McLean being named CTE Teacher of the Year! Click here to read more...

Friday was another full day of meetings and sessions here at CareerVISION 2012 in the beautiful GWCC.  Hundreds of state leaders gathered for breakfast early in the morning to hear about trends for ACTE and how the association will serve and support its members.  Awards galore recognized Quality State Association winners, as well as states meeting membership milestones.  Colleen Keffler was also feted for her activities championing State Leadership Training.  A productive networking session followed for state association presidents. Next, it was time to catch up with other California attendees as we held our CACTE meeting, greeting friends old and new, providing crucial state updates, and hearing from Executive Director Jan Bray (whom we lovingly refer to as the mother of CACTE, and to whom we presented with a farewell appreciation gift). Please remember to nominate a deserving CACTE teacher, new teacher, counselor, educator, or teacher in community service to Diane Walker by no later than December 15, 2012.  The state awards process has been simplified, and simply requires that nominees need to be a current CACTE member, with a completed nomination form and one-page recommendation letter.  All nominees and award winners will be recognized at the Educating for Careers Conference in Sacramento in March 2013.  Award winners’ complete dossiers will be forwarded for consideration for Region V awards. Click here for more information on the ACTE awards program.

How many CTE teachers do you know who use effective, innovative instruction in the classroom to benefit student achievement, are involved in the CTE community, and are models for other colleagues?  Is there a newer CTE teacher at your site or in your district who exhibits instructional leadership? Or is there a CTE teacher whom you know who inspires others to community and professional service in your area? Is there a counselor who provides outstanding services for your CTE students, as well as advocates for CTE in the community? The CACTE Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for California CTE Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Educator, New CTE Teacher of the Year, CTE Teacher in Community Service, and ACTE Career Guidance awards.

ACTE has recently changed its educator award programs to be more inclusive for all members.  In order to be eligible for CTE Teacher of the Year awards, full-time teachers (teaching in non-baccalaureate programs) must be an ACTE member in good standing at the time of the nomination and have been teaching for at least five years, or for only three years in order to be considered for New Teacher of the Year and Teacher in Community Service categories.  It is suggested that nominees have participated in ACTE activities at the state or national level.  Outstanding Educator is available for those not in full-time teaching positions, with similar requirements.  The ACTE Career Guidance Award is available for full-time guidance staff or career developers who are active members, who advocate for CTE in their community, and provide career development resources for high school students or adults. For more details on the member award requirements, visit the ACTE awards website

Send completed nomination materials to Ross Arnold or Diane Walker no later than December 15, 2012. Award winners will be recognized at the Educating for Careers Conference in Sacramento in March, and will be considered for ACTE Region V awards through a separate application process. Region winners compete for awards at the national ACTE level at the annual CareerTech VISION conference. Please nominate a deserving CACTE member today!

Additional awards are also available for business and other CTE partners, as well as essay contests for students. Be sure to visit the ACTE Awards Program website above for more details.
